Last week, Perth Children’s Hospital cancelled a scheduled ‘Grand Round’ because of “perceptions of pro-Palestinian bias”. What’s the scam?
The scam is that the event was cancelled because an invited speaker, Dr Sue Wareham, who leads the Medical Association for Prevention of War (MAPW), has previously spoken about the Gaza genocide and its impact on children.
Grand Rounds are traditional educational lectures held by hospital departments where clinicians and medical trainees share complex patient cases, new research, and treatment updates. In this case, the focus was to discuss “the severe threats to child health and well-being in all war zones.”
Wareham told MWM, “Hospitals cite staff sensitivities as the reason for cancellation, but the real reason is to avoid any mention of Gaza.”
“It is very disturbing to me that decision-makers in our hospitals would allow adult sensitivities to prevail over our ethical duty to name and
address this profound medical and ethical tragedy affecting the most vulnerable of all people.
