Dutton and Albanese playing nuclear politics. What’s the scam?

by Rex Patrick | May 24, 2024 | What's the scam?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been having a ball calling out Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s lack of forthrightness in telling Australians where he’s planning to put nuclear power plants should he be successful in winning government. What’s the scam?

The scam is that it’s It’s nimby politics by Dutton, but it’s also disingenuous by the Government.

In February last year, the Government entered into a contract with Steven Grzeskowiak to lead a team to identify locations in the “current and future Defence estate” that could be suitable to store and dispose of spent nuclear fuel and higher level radioactive waste.

Nuclear waste. Fifty years of searching, still nowhere to dump it.

The review team included experts from the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), the Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA), Defence and Geoscience Australia.

They completed their work late last year. A report has been provided to the Government.

A request for the release of the report under Freedom of Information Laws has been met with a claim the document is ‘Cabinet confidential’. That means the report is potentially buried for 20 years, albeit not as long as the 100,000 years that high-level radioactive waste will need to be buried).

FOI nuclear waste

So, whilst Albanese is making a call on Dutton to be transparent about the locations for nuclear power stations, which may or may not ever become a reality, he’s wrapped a radioactive resistant secrecy blanket over where he intends to locate a high-level radioactive waste management facility, which would be reality.
