Cooking with gas: a climate disaster in the pipeline

Australia now has over 4000 proposed gas plants and a thousand megawatts of new coal-fired power in pre-construction according to the Global Energy Monitor (GEM).

The number of gas plants is made up of 3628 proposed gas plants and 380 currently in construction. These will add to the over 14,000 gas plants currently in use around the country.

The thousand MW of coal-fired power, if realised, will add to the 24,677 MW already in operation.

The GEM report finds that after rising in 2020 for the first time since 2015, total coal power capacity under development declined 13% last year, from 525 gigawatts (GW) to 457 GW, a record low.

Gas-fired power, on the other hand, is experiencing a boom in new construction.
