Senate rejects bid to strip tax breaks from charities funding the IDF and West Bank settlements

by | Sep 8, 2026 | The West Report

Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi moves to deny deductible gift recipient status to any organisation helping finance an illegal occupation. Labor and the Coalition both refuse to back it.

She cites Michael West Media reporting on the Chai Charitable Foundation, which claimed more than $19m in tax-deductible donations in 2025, and United Israel Appeal Australia, which reported $50m in revenue in 2024. Asked whether the ACNC is investigating either, the minister says the regulator is independent and confirms its external conduct standards do not extend to international law.
