While the gas lobby continues to cry crocodile tears about taxation hindering new investment, the global market for gas tells a different story. What’s the scam?
The scam is that the supposed need for Australia to invest more in gas is not backed by global demand; quite the contrary. Why invest at all?
According to a just-released report by the independent energy think tank Ember, solar energy generation grew 17 times faster than gas in 2025, and gas’s share of electricity generation continues to fall.

And as Japan’s gas lobbyists cry more than most, and have allegedly met with government ministers twenty times over the last few years, Japan leads the way in declining gas demand.

But as any gas lobbyist worth their – ahem – gas would say, don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.
