Whistleblower out. Cricket Australia investigates ‘contracts-for-mates’ affair

by | May 20, 2026 | Business, Latest Posts

Cricket Australia has launched an internal investigation into a $600k cloud deal as whistleblower pays heavy price. Joel Jenkins reports.

Cricket Australia has confirmed it is conducting an ‘independent review’ of the controversial $600,000 cloud services contract at the centre of contracts-for-mates allegations — but the whistleblower who first raised the concerns has already lost his job.

The governing body is now under growing pressure, with the Australian Cricketers’ Association understood to be seeking assurances about governance standards in the wake of the scandal.

The human cost

A passionate long-term Cricket Australia employee, who approached the board with his concerns before going public anonymously via Michael West Media, is understood to have been made redundant shortly after lodging the detailed complaint.

The whistleblower, described by colleagues as a dedicated custodian of the game, presented a comprehensive dossier including ASIC documents, timelines and internal records. He has since been removed from his position.

South Indian network at centre of claims

At the heart of the affair is a cluster of companies with strong connections to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. The senior Digital & Technology executive at the centre of the allegations, along with several rapid senior hires in his division, share professional histories at the NRL and similar South Indian regional backgrounds.

The report highlights how SST Cloud Pty Ltd and associated entities TruFyre Technologies received over $600,000 in purchase orders with remarkable speed.

Dodgy transactions?

Key questions remain around the deal:

  • No formal Request for Proposal or detailed Statement of Work appears to have been completed.
  • Contractors were onboarded in mid-January 2026, before any purchase orders.
  • Multiple senior oversight roles, including Head of Cyber Security and Head of Customer Experience, were culled in March-April 2026, with around 20 positions lost in the broader reshuffle.

CA responds

A Cricket Australia spokesperson told MWM:

“We are aware of the claims and they are currently being independently reviewed.”

The organisation has declined to comment on the specific transactions, the executive’s connections to the supplier companies, or the timing of the redundancies.

MWM contacted the senior executive named in the report for comment on his alleged links to TruFyre Technologies Pty Ltd and SST Cloud Pty Ltd. He replied:

“As per our protocol and guidelines, please reach out to our media and communications department for any queries and they will be happy to respond to the same.”

The revelations have intensified pressure on embattled chief executive Todd Greenberg and chairman Mike Baird. With the states already demanding deep cost cuts at head office and the Big Bash League privatisation process under fire, these fresh governance concerns are landing at the worst possible time.
