Coal miner Simon Turner is heading back to court. Turner broke his back at BHP’s Mount Arthur mine in 2015 and was classified as a white-collar worker on $400 a week instead of $130,000 a year. Michael investigates how BHP and labour hire company Chandler Macleod shifted his workers’ compensation claim onto the NSW government’s iCare scheme instead of the coal industry’s own insurer, Coal Mines Insurance, which is half-owned by the Mining and Energy Union and half by the coal lobby. BHP is suing to keep the case, and the evidence, out of public view.
We follow the money trail from coal mining companies to labour hire firms to insurers to unions to political parties.
